Tutu Skirt for the Edgy Chic

I’ve always been the sporty chic – definitely NOT the graceful gal. In fact, I remember my gymnastics coach in the early 90’s convincing my mom to enroll me in ballet classes in an effort to improve “my lines.” Simply put, I was terrible. I was good at suiting up in the garb but that was about it (insert laughing emoji)! Well, since my days on the dance floor are few and far between, I have to get creative when it comes to dressing like a dancer. This is as close as I’ll get to being a ballerina and wearing a tutu!

So how is a sporty chic supposed to dress? I wish there was a straight forward answer. Although I am the epitome of a girly girl, I LOVE an edgy outfit. Last week my friend (and store owner) said to me, “you’re edgy but you wear pearls!” She hit the nail on the head. I love leather and lace but appreciate the feminine things in life too. Today’s look is the perfect hybrid of the two.

With waist lines on the rise, crop tops are becoming wardrobe staples. When I came across this faux leather version I knew I’d get a ton of use out of it. It’s the perfect amount of edge to balance out my ultra feminine side. When I do not wear it with skirts, I will wear it with pants. The fit is true to size. I am wearing a size small and the back is adjustable with bra-like hook and closures. Now about the tutu skirt…the inspiration behind this outfit post! This polka dot skirt is what edgy girl’s dream of. The asymmetrical hem adds an appropriate amount of funk to an otherwise classic piece. I love black on black but it’s also available in pink if that doesn’t suit your fancy.

How to Style White Sandals

Call me old fashioned, but ever since I was a little girl I have associated white shoes with nurses! Remember when they used to wear white head to toe?! Not that there is anything wrong with that career choice, but there is something about white kicks that seems so sterile. Not to mention they have the ability to make your feet look like boats! Fast forward a couple of decades and all of a sudden they’re “cool” and I own not one but two pairs! Here’s how to wear white sandals and look stylish while doing it.

To avoid the clown shoe appearance, always choose a strappy sandal. This is even more important if you’re wearing white shoes with white pants. Showing some skin will break up all of the white and add dimension. Click here to see how I style white tassel hem jeans with this pair of sandals.

If strappy shoes are out of the question, consider styling your white sandals with cropped pants or shorts. Bearing your ankles will also counter the enlarging abilities. As you can see in today’s look, I paired white sandals with ankle length jeans. That is all it takes.

Finally, color is key! Monochromatic looks are beautiful but unless you are bearing a lot of skin, I recommend adding color into the mix. Which look do you prefer? White jeans with a vibrant top, or blue jeans with a multicolored top? I cannot decide but I am certain that you will not find a cuter gingham shirt for $27!

Age Gracefully in White Jeans

As I approach my third decade in life, I find myself avoiding white jeans more frequently. You can see EVERYTHING through them. The dimples (yep I said it) and all the other stuff you prefer NOT to highlight. But just because our bodies change with age doesn’t mean we have to alter our style. Today is my attempt to teach you how to wear white jeans with confidence! Hear me out.

The Cut

If you shy away from white jeans for the reasons above, closely consider the cut. For example, I avoid white skinny jeans like the plague. Instead, I gravitate towards: flare, bootcut, or straight leg jeans. The taper at the knee takes tension off of the thighs, leaving you with a smooth upper half. This tassel hem pair is the perfect hybrid of skinny and straight.

Length of Top

If you’re squeamish at the thought of white pants, the length of your top makes all the difference. Make sure it is long enough to cover your lady parts. I stick with tunics or tops with asymmetrical tail hems. The added back coverage makes me feel more comfortable in my skin (literally and figuratively)! This stunner by Alice and Trixie, for example, provides me moderate front and back coverage. Try something like this and let me know what you think.

Wear it Like You Own it

Finally, take this opportunity to pledge that you’ll never say, “I can’t pull that off” ever again! It literally makes me sad when I get comments from people saying, “I love your outfit but I could never pull that off.” You can pull off anything as long as you do it with confidence! Remember that the next time your shopping for white jeans!

Navy and White Midi Skirt: 9 to 5 Chic

You already know my thoughts about navy…it’s pretty much the new black. But if you’re new to my blog, you can hear my schpiel here! Anyway, there’s no better time to get in your navy and white than during the summer months. It’s just so nautical. Today is my attempt to teach you how to dress nine to five chic in you guessed it – navy and white!

When dressing conservatively for the office, the midi length is always safe! I used to think the midi length couldn’t work for shorties like me, but it turns out I was doing it all wrong. If you’re on the petite side, consider high waisted midi length garments and crop tops. The high waist will automatically lengthen the appearance of your legs. Another quick tip is to stick with dark colors. They have a similar affect. You’ll be surprised how much longer and leaner you look in a navy or black skirt. This outfit is very easy to recreate and if you’re not comfortable bearing your shoulders at work, just wear a blazer.

I used to think white shoes were for clowns. Not really, but they can make your feet look sooo much bigger then they actually are! It wasn’t until I discovered this pair that I had a change of heart. Ombre Jeans and Summer Brights

Why spend $200 on a pair of pants when you can spend $35?! In the fashion blogging business it is very unlikely that you’ll wear the same garment more than a handful of times. Luckily I have been a fan of Forever 21 since my teenage years and there is no end in sight. Regardless of the “stigma,” I always find what I am looking for there and I am not ashamed of it! For example, this pair of ombre jeans will get me though the season until I move on to the next trend and I am not suffering from buyer’s remorse. Score!

Nine times out of 10 the quality meets my expectations. But there is a smart way to shop from mass produced retailers with an exchange only return policy. To begin, I always glance through the product reviews. After making an initial assessment, I check the model’s measurements. Is she 5′ 10″ and wearing a dress that hits at mid thigh? If so, I’ll DEFINITELY be making a trip to the tailor. I also pay attention to the composition. Does the material stretch? I’m petite but curvier than the average size model. I hardly ever buy anything that appears tight on the model’s lower half. Ask yourself these questions before purchasing something from Forever 21 and save yourself the hassle and aggravation of a trip to the mall.

Now about this outfit…I am wearing a size one in these ombre jeans and they are a little bit big in the waist. But when you have a booty, and there is no stretch in the fabric, the infamous back gap is to be expected. Regardless, I love girlfriend denim and this is the most unique pair I’ve ever seen. The dip-dye fabric adds a bohemian twist to an otherwise classic style and the rips are all the rage. Just be careful not to step your foot into the wrong hole when you are putting them on!

I call this ensemble my summer brights outfit because it is vibrant but not in the traditional sense. I’m only wearing two colors: white and blue. Between the white top and the white sandals, however, it creates a strikingly bright combination. Obviously the pops of yellow don’t hurt but even if you took those away it would still be a radiant ensemble. In case you were unaware, yellow is the new neutral. Follow along as I style this purse throughout the summer and fall. In the meantime, remember to read the reviews, consider the model’s dimensions and the fabric before purchasing something you cannot return. Happy ~~Monday~~ shopping!

Mixed Textures for Added Pop

One of the easiest ways to stand out in a crowd is by incorporating mixed textures into your ensemble. Similar to mixing prints, this fashion hack applies to a monochromatic look, a classic black and white look, the list goes on…

A white blouse is a wardrobe staple and before last year’s holiday look, Get Your Sparkle On, believe it or not, I did not own one! I have no idea how I managed for so long because these classic items are suitable for day and night wear and everything in between. When I came across this beautiful rose collar blouse, at Forever 21, I could hardly believe my eyes. Only $22.90, I thought to myself, this looks like it’s from Saks or Barney’s! Man do I love a good look for less.

Although your first instinct may be to pair this top with solid black bottoms, that is the easy way out. Fashion is like interpreting a poem. You have to read in between the lines. I immediately envisioned this top with polka dot pants, until I discovered they are nearly impossible to find in the month of February. These printed slacks from H&M were the second best option. The black and white pattern actually accentuates the dainty rose collar – you never want to take away from the ensemble by introducing too many busy textures. Stick with one solid and one not.

I’ve said it before and I will say it again, a pop of color goes a long way! Whether it is in the form of a purse, lipstick, or shoes, easily take your ensemble from B+ to A+ work by incorporating a new hue. This time around I completed the look with yellow patent leather pumps and a colorful box clutch. There is something so retro about a sunny pair of stilettos. Don’t be surprised if you find me wearing this top with polka dot shorts come the warmer summer months!

Winter Pastels: Rose Quartz

Gone are the days where it is only acceptable to wear pastels during the spring months. But don’t take my word for it…take Pantone’s word for it – “the world-renowned authority on color.” The verdict is in and Rose Quartz (pale pink) and Serenity (periwinkle) have officially been named the 2016 colors of the year. For more about that, read last week’s Wish List Wednesday post. Anyway, consider this article your permission slip to wear all of the cotton candy colored outfits you can come up with.

Pantone’s big announcement was very exciting news to me. There is something so blissful about pastels. While you’ve probably begun to notice candy-colored shades in all shapes and forms at your favorite stores, I delved right into the trend with none other than a Rose Quartz cape coat! Crafted out of a luscious microsuede, this piece will sweeten up any soft-hued ensemble. I paired this cape with winter white flare jeans and added a hint of glam through my accessories. The iridescent earrings and glitter pumps popped nicely against the pink, and the metallic clutch brought the whole look together.
