Your Guide to Capannina San Francisco: Date Night Attire

Now that you know about my favorite Italian food in San Francisco, it’s time to discuss the appropriate date night attire. According to OpenTable, the dress code at Capannina is “casual elegant,” but I prefer to call it 5’clock chic! With dinner service from 5-10pm Sunday through Thursday, and 5-10:30pm on the weekends, come as you are and leave happy as a clam.

I love restaurants that are tasty and “chill.” We frequent Capannina during the week nights on the patio in “work clothes,” and Saturdays inside dressed to kill. In the life of Kelsey and Jonathan Kaplan, work clothes range from barre garb, scrubs, slacks, to sport coats. The point I am trying to make is that it doesn’t really matter what you wear! Regardless, I feel my best when I am over dressed. With that said, I always take advantage of an opportunity to wear something spicy, like this leopard jacket.

Last fall I bought a beautiful leopard and emerald faux fur coat in Italy. The ROI was great on this item as it became my go-to winter coat. Fortunately or unfortunately, it is no longer cold enough to wear faux fur in San Francisco. This lightweight leopard print jacket is a great springtime addition to my date night attire. It looks expensive but looks can be deceiving. At H&M, you can purchase this item for only $69!

Photos do not do this sassy jacket justice. The metallic print is super sharp and appears custom made. I receive so many compliments from women of all ages during dinner at Capannina. On the versatility scale, I rate it a 10. You can wear it as an overcoat, a dress coat, or as pictured above with a bodysuit. As an attempt to balance out the tight top on my upper half, I paired this look with destroyed girlfriend jeans (last seen here). Hope you enjoy my date night attire, but even if you don’t, you still have to try Capannina!

Destroyed Girlfriend Jeans

I’m baaaack! I am home in San Francisco and back with the swing of things. New York Fashion Week was a dream come true, but I’ll delve into that later this week. Before I left for the Big Apple, I searched the internet top to bottom for destroyed girlfriend jeans. The search ended on a high note with this pair from Express but then I forgot to pack them. Typical. Anyway, during the wild goose chase I learned a couple of things about girlfriend jeans that are worth sharing. Hear me out.

Express is a great place to shop if you often alter your clothes. Most pants are instock in sizes 00-18, and available in petite, short, regular, and tall lengths. Apparently I do not disclose my height often enough because when I met my blogger friends in person they all said, “you are so petite – you look taller in your photos.” So, I am shouting it from the rooftops, I am 5 feet tall and the tailor is my bff. No really though, I need to learn how to hem my own clothes!

When you shop for destroyed girlfriend jeans look for a cotton and spandex blend. You need the stretch or they will continue to rip as you wear them. I remember demolishing a pair of Free People jean shorts because my foot got stuck in the tears as I pulled them on. Always size down. Even if you think there is no way that you could fit a smaller size, just do it. I ordered three pairs of these jeans before getting the size right. They are referred to as “girlfriend” fit for a reason. Ideally you want them to be slightly roomy in the hips yet flattering on your figure. Today we feature a slouchy sweater, a moto jacket, and black ankle boots. Check back for more ways to style your destroyed girlfriend jeans.

Wish List Wednesday: Fall Go-Tos

Let’s get real, packing away summer clothes is not very fun. The summer months are so blissful – it is always a bit of a let down come the end of August. Even if you are not technically back-to-school shopping, there is no better way to get yourself out of a funk then with some retail therapy! Today I am featuring a few fall go-tos that should also be on your wish list.

One of the first items you should freshen up your wardrobe with is a reliable cardigan. Beige, black, and gray are three neutrals you should focus on. The “Easy to Be Chic Tassel Trimmed Cardigan” is a great layering piece to snag during this awkward transitional period. Whether you wear it solo or over a stylish ensemble, you’ll look effortlessly chic.

Starting the fall season with a new pair of sunglasses is always a good idea…there are plenty of days filled with abundant sunshine. It is also a great way to make a statement and the “Teggy” by Victory Optical will help you accomplish just that! These oversized frames feature a square shape and are available in ivory, tortoise, and pink.

Blush is the new neutral – you can never go wrong replacing your khaki or beige with it! This happy hue compliments black or brown accents and it is acceptable for wear all year long. Now that you have some staples lined up, it’s time to focus on a lightweight parka like this faux leather jacket. This draped piece features a cowl neckline and will look lovely over a top or dress.

Pleated Skirt

‘Tis the week of the maxi skirt on Kelsey Kaplan Fashion! While totally different than a mermaid skirt, a flowing pleated skirt is another great option for the warm weather months…here’s why!

The summer is a popular time of year for travel. Whether you’re jet setting to paradise, or riding in the passenger seat on a road trip, packing smart will save you time and frustration. A pleated skirt, like the featured item, is wrinkle-proof and extremely comfortable! Get off the plane or hop out of the car looking like a million bucks. Who doesn’t want that?! Aside from the comfort level and aesthetic appeal, when in the right color, a pleated maxi can be dressed down or up – another reason to add one to your suitcase.

I was immediately attracted to this pleated skirt because it reminded me of a multicolored scarf. To bring out the purple hues, I styled this beauty with an eggplant cropped halter. I found this one at Express and was pleasantly surprised by the $9.90 price tag. To bring out more colors in the pattern, I rocked a grayish-taupe necklace and matching sandals. Although it was not pictured, I threw a jean jacket over my shoulders for added warmth. As you can see the wind was picking up and there is nothing worse than bare shoulders when the wind whips off of the bay. If you’re attending the Union Street Festival this weekend, don’t be surprised if you see me in this outfit!

Off-the-Shoulder Trend

Raise your hand if you cannot get enough of the off-the-shoulder trend! No exaggeration, one out of every five photos on my Instagram feed is of an #ootd featuring an OTS garment. I do not blame you, or any other fashionista for being a fan, as this silhouette is flattering for everyone and comes in all shapes and forms, colors and patterns. Check out one way that you can style a basic black off-the-shoulder shirt.

There is something so tropical about printed bottoms and an off-the-shoulder combination. It reminds me of hula dancing on the beach (insert laughing emoji). While you will not catch me doing that any time soon, you can expect to find me in different variations of the ensemble mentioned above. The Floral Print High Waisted A-Line Skirt is just waiting for an OTS top and this cropped black version is the perfect mate. When you are working with a high-waisted garment, take advantage of the cut, and do what you can to show off that tapered waistline.

Playing off of the exotic theme, I styled this look with gladiator wedge sandals and turquoise earrings. A bare neckline is the perfect excuse to break out some killer statement earrings. This tassel pair seems to sell out within minutes online, but the good news is they are available at your local H&M. How do you style your off-the-shoulder tops? I would love to hear your ideas!

Side Zip Trousers and a Pop of Yellow

“Summertime” in San Francisco is quite different from the typical summer season. Although 10 months out of 12 it is at least 65 degrees and sunny, historically June and July are “cold.” When the rest of the country is in shorts and tanks soaking up the Vitamin C, San Franciscans are often in pants and sweaters. While you probably think I am being dramatic, a windy and foggy 50 degrees feels cooler than you’d think! It is something about the biting air whipping off of the bay. For that reason alone, the outfit below is a good choice for a ~~summer~~ day in San Francisco.

If you cannot already tell, I am mildly obsessed with printed pants – specifically printed trousers. They are so easy to dress up and way more interesting than standard khakis or black slacks. Naturally, when I came across this pair of side zip paisley trousers, I had to have them. Aside from the comfortable stretch material, the neutral color scheme makes for simple matching and all-year-round wear. To balance out the hip-hugging fit, I went with a beige oversized tunic sweater this time around, although I am already envisioning them with an orange tunic during the fall. I accessorized the look with some statement jewelry, and a python metallic clutch – mixing prints/textures is the latest hip trend. I completed the look with a floppy hat and yellow patent leather pumps. Don’t let the yellow scare you! These kicks match with a lot more than you think, and the sunny hue is a great way to add some pop to your ensemble.

The Chambray Shirt for Spring

I often talk about neutrals and the benefits of incorporating versatile pieces into your wardrobe. But let’s get real, there is nothing more versatile than a pair of white shorts…dress ’em up or down with the right accessories. Excited to break out a pair of white cuffed shorts for the first time this season, I have a feeling I’ll be “setting them and forgetting them” after the next few months!

For years I’ve been successful at finding a modest pair of shorts at Express. The signature 4.5 inch belted cuffed shorts are offered in a variety of colors and the longer length makes them suitable for many occasions. Tuck a chiffon blouse into these shorts and fasten them with a metallic leather belt, or pair them with your favorite cotton top and adorn yourself in jewelry. In the ensemble below I went the second route. If you do not yet own a button down chambray shirt, get on it! These shirts can play the role of a light jacket or a blouse. For the look below, I chose to dress up my chambray shirt with a beaded statement necklace. Sticking with blue tones, I further accessorized with lace up powder blue high heels.
