Begin by identifying the focal point of the ensemble. In this case the chartreuse shirt is the main focus. After that, think complimentary colors (opposites on the color wheel) to help you choose a contrasting hue. Although chartreuse is not on the color wheel, yellow is, so I went with turquoise, a shade of blue.

Next, embellish the look with a bold print. Be sure to pick a pattern inclusive of both the focus color, and the complimentary color. I chose an infinity scarf to dress up the top, but a purse would have had a similar effect. Take it one step further with jewelry, like the turquoise earrings and ring pictured here.

Finally, incorporate neutral accents to ensure a polished look. In this instance I paired this top with gray jeans to avoid introducing yet another shade of blue into the mix. I followed suit by wearing simple nude pumps, and toting a tan purse.

Whether you are attempting to dress down a look, or dress up a look, chances are there is a scarf out there to help you accomplish your goals. Need a layering piece for some added warmth? I can guarantee there is a scarf out there to bundle up with. Heading out for a boat ride and need to tame your mane? There is a scarf out there to keep your locks in place. Desperate to cover up the infamous “turkey neck” (I kid you not!)? Grab a scarf and off you go. Moral of the story, the next time you find yourself debating over a scarf, just buy it, and you’ll thank me later!

Using a scarf to dress down a look is demonstrated in my post “How to Wear Boyfriend Jeans Day and Night.” With the addition of a light or pastel colored scarf, tone down a blouse for daytime wear.

Turn to faux fur or cashmere to dress up an outfit. In the post “New Year’s Eve Outfit,” I added a touch of glam with a black faux fur infinity scarf to ring in the new year.

In the outfit below, I paired a beige peplum top (sold out but try this or this) with a statement necklace, a bejeweled watch, and a faux fur infinity scarf. I polished off the look with black wax-coated jeans (similar here) and my favorite pair of black pumps.

Isn’t it amazing how a few adornments can transform an ordinary look to a special occasion look in a matter of seconds?!
