This dress is a favorite for many reasons. A halter neck gets me every time and the keyhole detail is ultra feminine. The best feature, however, is the hip-hugging faux leather midi skirt. The longer length balances out the slim fit silhouette, and the gold zipper detail creates just enough oomph. If it wasn’t for the high slit, this dress would not be flattering on a petite frame. Midi skirts tend to “cut off” our legs at an undesirable spot, making them appear shorter than they actually are. The steamy slit helps us avoid this fashion faux pas! I styled this dress with gold accents – a box clutch, vintage Miriam Haskell earrings, and nude pumps.

Miriam Haskell the world-renowed jewelry aficionado opened the doors of her first boutique in 1926 in New York’s McAlpin Hotel. “Le Bijou De L’Heure” quickly became the go-to shop for high society women to purchase custom-made jewels to match their haute couture ensembles. Joan Crawford, the Dutchess of Windsor, and Lucille Ball to name a few. During Haskell’s travels to Paris where she would hand select the finest beads and findings, she would enjoy tea with none other than Coco Chanel. It is said that Haskell’s “design artist,” Frank Hess would join the ladies as they discussed matters related to the fashion industry and upcoming collections.

Today, the Miriam Haskell company continues to run in NYC. Each precious piece is crafted entirely by hand and are reminiscent of Haskell’s original vintage designs. Many finished items feature pearls and Swarovski crystals pieced together into ornate treasures. The chandelier earrings featured in A Black Tie Affair are a wonderful example of this exquisite artistry. No matter what angle you see them from, they are simply stunning – one of Haskell’s key features.  Unlike your average costume jewelry, these masterpieces are assembled meticulously from top to bottom so that even the backside, or the clasp of the jewelry is dazzling (no pun intended!). With ample warning of this event taking place, I made it a point to take my time and find a stellar gown that wouldn’t break the bank. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a fancy shmancy dress that you’ll only wear once. With that in mind, I turned to my go-to online retailer, lulu*s! The Sorella Light Blue Maxi Dress was priced just right ($205!) and in one of my favorite silhouettes. This gorgeous strapless gown features a sweetheart neckline, and princess seams down the fit and flare bodice. Available in ivory and light blue, to me, this simple yet elegant dress is like a blank canvas awaiting the right accessories. Although you cannot see them, I kept it clean and paired this stunner with matching lace-up sandals (as seen in last month’s post, A Crop and a Midi). Knowing I would style my hair to the side, in a 1940’s wave, I was on the hunt for a pair of sizable statement earrings. Leave it to Jest Jewels to carry just the right pair of vintage Miriam Haskell ear bling. These one-of-a-kind earrings were like the icing on a cake – the perfect finishing touch. To go along with the whole old school Hollywood Glam theme, I toted around my belongings in a gold box clutch purse.
