Mixing prints is not an exact science. I suggest starting with one piece then building off of there. I was attracted to this bodysuit from the moment I laid eyes on it. I love demonstrating how sheer doesn’t have to be racy and the floral design definitely adds a ladylike touch. With the holiday season in mind, textured or colored bottoms are a must. I chose the latter!

It is very important to break up the contrasting prints that you are wearing. You do not want to wear a chevron top and a plaid bottom. Instead, separate the patterns with a solid item in between. These burgundy flare pants are the barrier between the floral and leopard print patterns, and I love how they accentuate the rose petals.

If you are a mixed prints newbie, I do not blame you for feeling overwhelmed. Remember this: leopard print is a neutral! As far as I am concerned, black or tan accents are interchangeable with black and tan animal print. In the featured look these leopard booties elevate the ensemble from fair to funky.

When I came across this retro floral top at my local H&M, I had to have it. Featuring three quarter length sleeves and a darling pleated back, this top is the perfect addition to your autumn attire. Sticking with the same color palette, I paired this piece with olive Girlfriend Jeans from Gap and a pumpkin wristlet. I completed the look with green bangles and leopard print wedge booties. Contrasting prints is one of the easiest ways to take your outfit to the next level – just work around one dominant color. For example, when I look at this floral pattern, my eye is immediately drawn to the orange hues. I knew the leopard shoes would work, because they are in the same orangey-brown color family. Capeesh?!

If you want to get your feet wet before breaking out the checks and dots, then hear me out! A great way to experiment with contrasting separates is to start with a stand-out accessory. This could be a pair of bold shoes, a purse, or in this case, sunglasses. When I came across these sunnies at Ambiance, I instantly fell in love. No they are not the most practical pair that I own, but they sure will make a statement when I rock ’em. Rather than styling these fun frames with a solid top or dress, I went for my favorite blue striped boyfriend shirt and white cut-off shorts. How did I arrive at this configuration? I was going for the mixed prints look but in a more subtle fashion. Within the geometric pattern of the sunglasses, blue is very prevalent and the reason I paired them with a blue striped shirt! To pull in another prevailing color, I embellished the look with bright pink pumps, and a matching floppy hat. Finally, to incorporate more of the geometric pattern, I polished off the outfit with a similar multi-colored clutch purse. How’s that for a mixed prints beginner run?!
