How to Add Color to your Neutral Wardrobe

For some of us the emergence of color is great news, but for others vibrant hues may be slightly intimidating. If you fall into the latter group, I encourage you to give the trend a try. And you don’t have to leave the house in a lime green outfit to participate! Start by including pops of color into your neutral ensemble. Pair a floral top (13) with a pair of blush pants (20), and a vibrant lip color. Or, incorporate a vibrant shoe (10) with a crisp little white dress (5). There’s no wrong way to do it!

Stand Out in the Crowd

It’s official, I want one of everything on this list. The rainbow maxi (1) is an obvious must-have item, but I’ve been eyeing the mules (10) and pumps (11) for weeks. One can never own too many pairs of shoes…am I right? But aside from bold hues and vibrant prints, I am loving the resurgance of tie dye apparel. It makes wearing button downs (8) and classic tops (7) more exciting to wear. Now which item is on your must-have list?!

When you’re doubtful of an item, but willing to give it a try, make it unapollogetically yours. What I mean is, add your signature flair! At first glance this dress appears too conservative to fit in with my funky collection. But the gold shimmer detail and pleats convinced me to buy it anyway. Have you ever shopped at Shein? Despite the questionable website design, it’s legit and so are the rock bottom prices. This dress was only $30 and part of the reason I was willing to step out of my comfort zone. Yeah, I have one of those too!

The addition of a rose gold belt and high fashion purse made all the difference here. I could have styled this dress with my black Gucci belt, but that was too predictable. Mixing metals is effortless and will instantly up your style game. Think about it – some of our most prized possessions and the accompanying accessories are now available in rose gold, silver, and yellow gold. The iPhone and Apple Watch to name a few. It is the “cool” thing to do! As we approach a new decade, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and wear something fun, fresh, and funky!

It is no secret that I am the official pink lady…and 50 shades of pink remain hot for the fall. From minis, maxis, to ruffled out rompers, I am covering it all. Is a swimsuit on your packing list this Labor Day weekend?! Consider swapping out a bikini for a sexy one-piece and dress it up with a playful pair of earrings. I’m about to add this one to my shopping cart! When in doubt, wear ripped jeans. Distressed denim has the ability to oomph up your outfit in a matter of minutes. The coat dress ia a #bosslady’s secret weapon during the cold weather months. We all have crazy busy days where outfit planning simply does not fit into the equation. Fortunately, a reliable coat dress can play two roles: outerwear and daytime wear. Who doesn’t appreciate a two-for-one deal?! Rather than coordinating an entire ensemble, let a coat dress do the thinking and maybe even the talking for you!

So how does one dress in a statement color without looking like a clown?! The answer is rather simple: combine it with classics! In this instance I am wearing a loud coat dress with black and white polka dot pants. The timeless print effortlessly tones down the nontraditional hue – it’s all about balance. Naturally I opted for a bright white boot, though black is perfectly acceptable. For your reference, I am wearing an xs in the coat and it fits true to size. How do you “do” statement hues?! I would love to hear it!

I know what you are thinking, “this is too good to be true.” You are definitely not dreaming and this dress is definitely worth more than $15. Regardless, there is something so flattering about a fit and flare dress. That is probably why the f&f silhouette is so popular among brides. It hugs your bod in all of the right places, perfectly accenting your assets. Who can complain about that?! So where does one find a smokin’ hot dress for less than $20?! At Shein, of course!

Having an open mind is not only good for the soul, but it will come in handy when you shop for clothes. I will buy an outfit from ANYWHERE as long as it makes me feel good. I do not believe that price automatically denotes quality or “purity.” This inexpensive dress fits better than some of the designer items hanging in my closet with the tags still attached. The key to shopping successfully regardless of price is to pay attention to the product details and reviews. More specifically, the garment’s composition and the model’s measurements. Ask yourself these questions: Does the fabric stretch? How tall is the model and what size waist does she have?

Being cognizant of such details will save you the hassle of returning online orders. I have never returned an item from Shein after comparing my body measurements to the product details. Bonus: The cropped hem fits as a traditional maxi for petite folks. Happy shopping!

A modern take on a vintage bowler bag, this pretty little thing will have the compliments rolling in. Featuring a multicolor pattern and rhinestone closure, this will not be the last time I tote this playful item. So many vanity bags are not suitable for everyday use. Many lack interior side pockets or enough space to store an iPhone plus. I’m happy to report this bowling ball bag has it all and a detachable shoulder strap. For only $48, there is no better way to add some fun to your fall outfit. It is hard not to smile while carrying this bag!

Now just because I have the bag, it doesn’t mean I am about to rock the matching shoes. C’mon now, ME in bowler shoes?! I don’t think so! Remember, this is the girl who didn’t even own a pair of flats for more than half her life! Anyway, it was my attempt to bring out all of the fall hues in the purse with a “striking” fall look (ok, maybe I am getting carried away with the play on words!). These wide leg pants and gold top do just that! High-waist pants are always a good idea for short legged folk like me. But if you are not comfortable in platform shoes, you will definitely need to make a trip to the tailor. You win some and you loose some…#shortpeopleproblems.

First or Tenth

Is this your first designer handbag or your tenth? If it’s your first, consider choosing a classic color. Do you wear black or brown more often? This is the litmus test I recommend using for all wardrobe staples! Now that you have the color picked out, it’s time to think about the hardware. Do you wear silver or gold jewelry? Many high end brands craft leather goods with either/or. Consider this your warning: Do not settle. If you look hard enough you’ll find the perfect black bag with gold hardware vice versa.

Size matters

Once you have a “vision” it’s time to consider the size. Without question, in the handbag industry, the bigger the bag the higher the price tag. What type of lifestyle do you live? Are you often on the go? Do you have the iPhone 7 or iPhone 7 plus? For the lady on the go, a medium to large purse is ideal. Maybe you don’t have time to go home in between work and play. A sizable purse gives you enough room for a change of shoes and small laptop. Don’t be afraid to do a “fit test” in store.

Everyday or special occasion?

How often do you plan on wearing the purse? Till “the wheels fall off” or for special occasions only? For an everyday purse, I highly recommend material that is easy to clean. Think smooth or patent leather – something you can wipe down with a wet wipe. Reserve the suede and velvet for special occasion. Tip: Store your designer handbag in the included pouch to increase its resell value.

Love Your Designer Handbag

The black shoulder bag (two pictures up) was my first Gucci purchase. This item is approaching five years old and its retirement is no where in sight. The medium size has suited me well over the years. Not only is it a show stopping “everyday” purse, but it doubles as a reliable to and fro handbag. I can easily stuff it with my cosmetics bag, iPad, and GG’s supplies. Fast forward to 2017 and my latest investment piece is this yellow statement bag. I realize yellow may not be everyone’s favorite color, but I am admittedly the most impractical person I know! So remember, consider the color, the size, and the longevity before pulling the trigger. This is the criteria I use when I splurge on a designer item and you all know how often I re-wear ’em all!
