Express is a great place to shop if you often alter your clothes. Most pants are instock in sizes 00-18, and available in petite, short, regular, and tall lengths. Apparently I do not disclose my height often enough because when I met my blogger friends in person they all said, “you are so petite – you look taller in your photos.” So, I am shouting it from the rooftops, I am 5 feet tall and the tailor is my bff. No really though, I need to learn how to hem my own clothes!

When you shop for destroyed girlfriend jeans look for a cotton and spandex blend. You need the stretch or they will continue to rip as you wear them. I remember demolishing a pair of Free People jean shorts because my foot got stuck in the tears as I pulled them on. Always size down. Even if you think there is no way that you could fit a smaller size, just do it. I ordered three pairs of these jeans before getting the size right. They are referred to as “girlfriend” fit for a reason. Ideally you want them to be slightly roomy in the hips yet flattering on your figure. I already own an elephant scarf, and necklace, but elephant shorts?! For only $12.99, you too could own a pair of Elephant Print Pom Pom Shorts (pinch yourself you are not dreaming)! It sounds funny, but there is something very regal about this print. Featuring an elastic waist and darling hemline, whether you coverup at the beach in them or hit the streets for Sunday Funday, consider this your warning. You will be fawned over!

This black off-the-shoulder top may look familiar, and that is because I last styled it here with an a-line skirt. When styling a printed bottom, it is best to stick with solids above the waist. If you are new to the OTS trend, start out with a basic black and you’ll be hooked sooner than later. Sleeves are ideal in San Francisco, so when I came across this top for under $20, I knew I would get a lot of use out of it. Going for a majestic vibe, I embellished the neckline with a dramatic gold necklace. I think it did the trick! Finally, I laced up my knee high gladiator sandals and painted a red lip. The Length

When you are working with a mesh dress or skirt, keep the length below the knee. While I have nothing against mini skirts and dresses, save those pieces for the beach. For a ladylike ensemble, a midi length garment is always the way to go. In the featured outfit, this shorts/skirt hybrid is appropriate for teatime because of the length.

The Neckline

Another easy way to keep your mesh garments in check is to cover your shoulders – although a bit old-fashioned. Picture this ensemble with a strappy halter top instead. Undoubtedly it would change the whole mood and feel of the outfit. Even if a jacket or blazer would be too hot where you live, consider cap sleeves, or a shawl for a more elegant look.

The Accessories

You already know my stance on jewelry and accessories, but believe it or not, it is even more important with an ensemble like this! Just think, had I painted my lips with a red lacquer, the vibe would have gone from sweet to steamy. The same goes with the shoes – a lace-up high heel versus a wedge heel. Finally, just like a strand of pearls, an ultra feminine necklace emanates high-class.

I am the first to admit that there are many items in life that I avoid wearing so that I am not mistaken for a 14 year old. Some people say this is a good problem to have, but there are times when it can become a bit cumbersome. Like when the TSA agent in Maui, a couple of months ago, asked me if I was old enough to travel alone! Yep, true story. Anyway, overalls have typically been on that list, however, it turns out when styled correctly, they can have the opposite effect. It is all about the under shirt and the shoes!

If you pair your overalls with a t-shirt and Keds, you’re asking for questions. Instead, style your overalls with a top that you would not find in the kid’s section. A lace bodysuit (seen here), or a sleeveless turtleneck demonstrated here, both fit the bill. I think we can all agree that this look would have a different feel if I had coordinated it with tennis shoes. Incorporating a racy shoe like a lace-up high heel gives off a mature vibe. To further age-proof the ensemble, I rocked a pair of tassel earrings and toted a black and white clutch purse.

There is something so tropical about printed bottoms and an off-the-shoulder combination. It reminds me of hula dancing on the beach (insert laughing emoji). While you will not catch me doing that any time soon, you can expect to find me in different variations of the ensemble mentioned above. The Floral Print High Waisted A-Line Skirt is just waiting for an OTS top and this cropped black version is the perfect mate. When you are working with a high-waisted garment, take advantage of the cut, and do what you can to show off that tapered waistline.

Playing off of the exotic theme, I styled this look with gladiator wedge sandals and turquoise earrings. A bare neckline is the perfect excuse to break out some killer statement earrings. Yes! Another shirt to add to my wardrobe of dresses, rompers, skirts, and jumpsuits. When I first laid eyes on this top, 1970’s fashions immediately came to mind. The bell sleeves are oh so groovy and the serene color is perfect for the spring. Aside from it’s funky features, the fit is tailored and flattering on all shapes and sizes. For only $50 have yourself a fabulous piece that will coordinate well with flare jeans, palazzo pants, cutoff shorts, etcetera.

I paired this blue beauty with a woven skirt creating a fun throwback look! The multicolor pattern reminds me of retro upholstery and the frayed hem adds a playful element. I’ve said it before and I will say it again, when you are working with a statement piece, such as this top, simplicity is key. That is why I did not go overboard with accessories. I simply embellished the look with a boho tassel necklace and blue denim wedge sandals. Is it ironic that I have the song, “shake your groove thing” stuck in my head as I am writing this?!

How does a California girl dress for a day in the swamp? In lightweight clothing, of course! Living in San Francisco, for the past three years, has turned me into a fair weather snob. It is safe to say that my tolerance for heat and humidity is nonexistent. As demonstrated here and here, I dressed for the tropics, during my Louisiana tour.

I decked out in another two-piece set, but this time, a skirt and top combo from Current Clothing. This look is a knock-off of the popular label, Faithful The Brand. You already know I am a huge fan of two-piece sets because they take the thinking out of getting dressed. This tomato red pair, by findersKEEPERS, is simply chic. The fitted crop top features a wrap front detail and exposed back zipper, making it a great standalone piece also. Picture this stunner with white high-waisted flare leg jeans. I stuck to basics this time around and styled it with matching trouser shorts. The front pleated design and exposed zipper add just enough oomph to an otherwise basic bottom.

Accessorizing with a solid ensemble is like the start of a new painting – the options are endless. Here is how you can transform a sophisticated look into an eclectic one. Begin with a funky pair of shoes. I chose gladiators because you can never go wrong with a black wedge. Now when it comes to jewelry, always remember, the funkier the chunkier. Knee-high lace-up sandals and dainty jewels do not go together – save the pearls for when you wear your pumps. The Vanessa Mooney necklace and cuff were the right mod additions, and the pop of turquoise was an added bonus. Red and turquoise will forever remain one of my favorite color combos.
