Finally! It’s here. My opportunity to vent about being an Instagram Husband! Well, not really. About two and half years ago, Kelsey, who I reflexively refer to as KelseyKaplanFashion as though I’m promoting her on my IG or Snap accounts, made a decision.

She was already working from home as the Marketing Director for BuildMyBod Health, a separate healthcare price transparency business I started. Not surprisingly, signing up doctors to participate in a price transparency platform wasn’t fulfilling enough.

The epiphany

She enjoyed writing but press releases for BuildMyBod didn’t tap into that enjoyment. There was another passion just under the surface. One day, she had an epiphany. Why not combine her writing ability with A Career in Fashion?

She always loved fashion. Not just as a shopper but also in a very professional and scholastic way. She graduated in fashion merchandising from LSU and worked as a manager at the fashion forward Rodeo Boutique in Baton Rouge, LA.

When she told me what she was going to do, I asked if she felt like she had enough content to blog and take photos consistently. I don’t remember her response exactly but looking back on these last couple of years, the overwhelming amount of content she has produced definitively answers that question.

Little did I know how much this epiphany would involve me and our Shih Tzu Ginny. Like many fashion bloggers’ Instagram husband, I became her photographer. In this particular case, it made sense. Aside from the cost savings of having me take her photos, my day job as a plastic surgeon made me more familiar with photography than most.

Learning photography

As a plastic surgeon, through training and practice, you’re programmed to take before and after photos of every patient for every procedure. It’s not just for cosmetic services. Even for a mole, you take photos to see if it’s changing in size or color; attributes that can be concerning for cancer.

However, in my case, it is for cosmetic services. When we moved to San Francisco from Louisiana four years ago, I took over an existing plastic surgery practice. I wanted this particular practice because it had its own in-office operating room, which allows for a very VIP patient experience. So day in and day out, I’m taking before and after photos of patients considering breast augmentation, tummy tucks, facelifts, eyelid lifts and any other lift you can think of.

I knew a little about cameras and had an entry level DSLR at the office, but it was still overwhelming using it for anything outside of the exam room. So we started with an iPhone. While I recognize many photographers out there are successful with an iPhone, and Apple loves to show off some of their greatest hits on billboards across the Bay Area, we never really hit our stride. The photos were simply too grainy.

We finally bit the collective bullet and bought a really nice Nikon D610. I’ve made this observation many times, so here I go again: You can buy a really good tennis racket or nice set of golf clubs and you’re still bad at tennis and golf. Buy a good camera and you can fake being a good photographer.

We started out setting the camera on automatic. Then as our comfort level grew, we switched to aperture priority and now we’re fully manual! I’m proud to say that I better understand the interactions between ISO, shutter speed, f stop, and type of lens. Before we started, I didn’t even know the meaning of those terms, now we’re manipulating them depending on the lighting, outfit and background.

We even got a 50 and 85mm lens. I wasn’t sure why we needed various lenses at the time but the diagram below really brought it into focus for me (pun intended). Now I understand the relationship between the angle of view and the distance from the lens to the sensor (the focal length).

But learning all of this was frustrating. The frustration was compounded by the overall thankless aspect of starting a fashion blog. Minimal traction. Brands don’t pay attention to you. Collaborations were non-existent. I started to wonder why Kelsey was doing all of this. Obviously you want your spouse to succeed at anything they put their mind to. And when Kelsey puts her mind to something, the saying, “a dog with a bone” comes to mind.

Finding her way

Kelsey was trying to find her niche. She wasn’t tall like a runway model. She wasn’t plus-sized so she couldn’t use the curvy moniker and tap into the body positivity movement. Kelsey was just this petite, fit, Bar Method, field hockey playing, Colombian Jewish girl from Connecticut. She grew up in a loving home with no major baggage. There was no real origin story or struggle.

But she did have one thing and her followers recognize it. A genuine love of fashion and rather than simply wearing nice clothes, she’s got this amazing gift for styling. I didn’t realize there was a difference between wearing clothes and styling clothes but she made that distinction apparent to me.

Rather than just putting on a dress, she’ll wear a pleated maxi dress with white booties. Without her flair, it would just look like a deranged psych patient wearing a shower curtain.

Every outfit, when appropriate, has a statement necklace, statement earrings or bangles.

I thought sequins went out in the ‘70’s but she brought ‘em back with a romper and a gumball bracelet.

A plain skirt is transformed with a tinsel fringe jacket that looks like she stole a cheerleader’s pom poms.

If she’s not showing off her ankles, she’s showing off her shoulders with, what else, an off-the-shoulder maxi dress with lace-up lucite sandals or Stuart Weitzman OTK boots!

Don’t think the fact that I’ve learned all of these terms as an IG husband is lost on me. Or the fact that I know Nasty Gal was bought by Boohoo.

Our marriage is based on love like a lot of successful marriages (hey, hey, six years already!). But I know we also see this institution (of marriage) as a business partnership. Which is why you see about 20 hyperlinks in this post promoting both our mutual and respective businesses. That’s part of who we are.

With ties to the Northeast, I finally had a plan. I would finish college at LSU and move back to the Tristate Area to work in NYC. But even after earning my degree, I wasn’t sold on the idea. I was managing a clothing boutique and LOVED styling outfits for my regular clients. I knew if I aspired to become a retail buyer in NYC, I would not be working directly with consumers. Plus, excel spreadsheets make me crosseyed and dyslexic tendencies start to enter the picture. That could get ugly when you’re in charge of hundreds of thousands of dollars in apparel.

Little did I know that my move to San Francisco would not only place me in the “center of the universe,” but it would open my eyes to a passion for writing. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not and will never enjoy writing research papers. However, when I arrived in SF almost four and a half years ago, I didn’t know a soul! I lost my hair stylist, brow lady, veterinarian…the list goes on. I found myself reading a ton of reviews on Yelp. The reading eventually turned into contributions of my own and I became a “Yelp Elite” having written 200 reviews on food (DUH!) and everything in between. Evidently I do enjoy writing when I have a genuine interest in the subject matter.

And just like that, my blog (business) was born. Well, sort of. My website started out as “KK and GG,” a resource for dog owners looking for pet friendly things to do in SF. But my passion is fashion and it became clear to me that my website and blog needed to be more fashionable in every sense of the way! Long story short, Kelsey Kaplan Fashion is where it’s at and I don’t envision that it’ll change in the foreseeable future. So why am I telling this story? Because the blogging industry is still new and it still gets misconstrued as a very time consuming hobby. That it ain’t! It is certainly time consuming, but it’s WAY more than a hobby. It is a business. There are start up costs and investments, monthly expenses, contracts, and account receivables.

While the blogging life may appear glamorous at all times, behind the scenes it is a lot of work, sometimes sacrifices, and it never turns off. As long as there are consumers trolling the internet, you must continue producing fresh content. While store fronts close for holidays and maybe even Sundays, Instagram never closes. That means on weekends, vacations, and maybe even wedding anniversaries it is your responsibility to engage with the platform. In a conventional workplace, there is something called a corporate latter that you can climb after meeting benchmarks. There is no such thing in the blogging industry and there are no manuals either. You learn on the way. I remember publishing my 300th blog post and it being like crickets. Was I ever going to reach a “tipping point?!”

I think it is important to note that I’m not complaining. I’m just being honest. Just like everything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with a career in blogging. Obviously to me the perks outweigh the disadvantages or I wouldn’t sacrifice my beauty rest (you think I’m kidding?!) It never gets old receiving boxes of “blogger mail.” As my mom says, “it’s like Hanukkah 365 days a year!” But aside from the awesome gifting opportunities, it’s very thrilling to be one of the first people to try a new product. But the fun doesn’t stop there. In the scheme of things, the blogging community is small. Everyone is connected via Instagram and hashtags make it possible to virtually “meet” like-minded people worldwide. It really is amazing. I used to think I was the only person who dreamt about clothes all day everyday, then I went to NYFW.

If you answered yes to the questions above, then you have what it takes to make a career in blogging. Now all that’s left to do is: buy a domain name, find somewhere to host your new website, buy cloud storage to store your data, get the lowdown on SEO, pretend to be a coder, design a theme, write your first post, learn photography and Lightroom/Photoshop, and maybe even find an IG husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend!
