So how is a sporty chic supposed to dress? I wish there was a straight forward answer. Although I am the epitome of a girly girl, I LOVE an edgy outfit. Last week my friend (and store owner) said to me, “you’re edgy but you wear pearls!” She hit the nail on the head. I love leather and lace but appreciate the feminine things in life too. Today’s look is the perfect hybrid of the two.

With waist lines on the rise, crop tops are becoming wardrobe staples. When I came across this faux leather version I knew I’d get a ton of use out of it. It’s the perfect amount of edge to balance out my ultra feminine side. When I do not wear it with skirts, I will wear it with pants. The fit is true to size. I am wearing a size small and the back is adjustable with bra-like hook and closures. Now about the tutu skirt…the inspiration behind this outfit post! This polka dot skirt is what edgy girl’s dream of. The asymmetrical hem adds an appropriate amount of funk to an otherwise classic piece. I love black on black but it’s also available in pink if that doesn’t suit your fancy.

Outfit planning is my jam and ideally I like to plan them per the occasion. It makes for a smarter shopping experience. Otherwise, it is like going to the grocery store on an empty stomach! Catch my drift? Although I do not have an event to wear this to, some things are too good to pass up. This peony skirt is of them! The photos do not do it justice. The beautiful metallic jacquard dazzles in the light and the sweeping full skirt is fit for a queen. Good thing my birthday is coming up in a couple of weeks!

As with any statement piece, you do not want to compete with it. I stuck to my own rules and dressed in black accents. The waist is high cut so a bodysuit or crop top is what I recommend. I chose the latter and topped it with a faux fur black stole. This pretty little thing is the only memory I have of my 21st birthday and almost a decade later it is still in style! I completed the look with ladylike accessories, pearls and regal black gloves. Now I will patiently await my invitation to the tea party…or maybe I should go ahead and plan one myself!

Let your velvet obsession begin! Who would have thought that this fabric would resurface in a variety of shapes and forms?! I sure didn’t after I retired my velvet overalls from Gap way back in the 90s (insert laughing emoji). Anyway, I’m stoked that velvet is “in” again because it’s actually very regal. How about this block heel bootie?! The “Edit” in blue is dreamy and it’ll match with everything you already dress your blue skinny jeans with.

It is safe to say that Kristin Cavallari and I have the same taste in shoes – I live in her slouch bootie during the work week. Just as I went to order another pair, I discovered the “Santorini.” OH. EM. GEE. Never have I ever laid eyes on a funkier shoe. I cannot decide what I like better, the geometrical shaped heel, or the color blocked design. As stylish as they may be, there is definitely a right and a wrong way to style a cape. To avoid the super hero look, show some skin. If you’re rocking over the knee boots, for example, gravitate towards a sleeveless under shirt and a cropped cape. Or, if you’re wearing a leg baring dress, consider a longline cape. It is all about the balance! Over the last couple of weeks, I have not left the house without a poncho or a cape. These garments undoubtedly make getting ready more enjoyable during the San Francisco fall “summer” weather.

The only thing better than a cape jacket is a cape dress. When I found this one from Asos, I knew I would get a lot of use out of it. The fall is packed with events in my husband’s industry and I always try to dress in business attire with a twist. This dress is perfect because from the back it looks like a long blazer, but turn around and BAM! The double breasted design with gold button closures are trendy as ever and the color is great for this time of year. I styled this piece with gold and gray accessories, although black would be a sharp contrast too.

Whenever I visit CT, I use it as an excuse to step up my prep game. The easiest way for me to accomplish this is to throw on a striped garment and some pearls (last seen here). This time around I rocked a cold shoulder top and my go-to chunky necklace. This top is one of my favorites because it is a feminine take on a boxy boyfriend shirt. Ok, ok, I know what you’re thinking, “another off the shoulder shirt?” It’s funny because two years ago I could not stand OTS tops – they would never stay in place. This year they’re almost all that I wear – I just tape them down with double sided fashion tape. Anyway, the White Off The Shoulder Colored Pom Pom Trim Blouse from SheIn is one that you should add to your collection ASAP. This playful shirt can double as beachwear and everyday summer garb. Thanks to its loose fit and lightweight construction, you will stay cool and well-ventilated while you wear this hip item.

Do not let the pom poms intimidate you. Simply style this piece as you would a versatile white top. My friend Shell, over at A Courageous Beauty, took an all white approach, while I paired this shirt with black cutoff shorts. I took the pom pom craze one step further incorporating lace-up sandals into the mix. Although there is a lot of color and pom pom goodness going on, it works because there is enough separation between the top and my feet! To pull out the blue hues in the upper and lower half of the ensemble, I accessorized with turquoise jewelry – one of my favorite summer staples. Finally, I polished off the look with a plum colored watch. Plum is the new neutral, but more about the watch later this week…
