The Experience

This one-of-a-kind museum exhibit features over 10 brilliant rooms and they’re all instagram-able. I can assure you that you’ve never seen anything “sweeter!” From carnival games, life-size gummy bears, floor to ceiling Pop Rocks, to a swimming pool full of sprinkles, here you will live your best “big kid in a candy shop” moment! Enjoy samples from Salt & Straw (yay no line), glitter coated cotton candy, and unicorn ice cream (that’s actually a thing) as you make your way through Candy Land.

The Outfit

Now that you know what to expect during a visit to the Museum of Ice Cream, it is time to discuss the attire! Definitely plan for pants with a stretchy waistband! When I think of candy, the color pink comes to mind. Maybe that is because I associate pink with bubblegum. Regardless, I had a funny feeling I would compliment the ambiance at the Museum of Ice Cream in this puff sleeve top. Luckily I was right! Add a few sparkles and you could have mistaken me for the cotton candy! No really though, you already know my feeling about cropped jeans…this time around I paired them with pearl embellished loafers. I still can’t believe I own a pair of flats. Who am I?!

Even though it is hard to believe, we are on our final summer stretch. Before you know it, all the bright summertime hues will be replaced with muted tones perfect for the fall. It is time to start gathering your transitional pieces, beginning with this jumpsuit. For only $49.99, go from summer to fall with the addition of a few accessories. Today’s look is what I refer to as an “in-betweener.” You can wear it now or save it for later! When shopping for transitional pieces, I gravitate towards solids. When I was a student at LSU, I managed the one and only Rode’o Boutique. This Baton Rouge hotspot is magazine material and deserves a spot on Rodeo Drive. Whether you’re a young professional, student, or new mom, it’s nearly impossible to leave the store without a bag full of goodies. When prepping for my trip, I had a feeling Rode’o would have something suitable for the tropics. After all, the Louisiana heat and humidity is “impressive.” Sure enough, the Viviana Romper was the perfect addition to my Puerto Vallarta attire.

Cut out garments are great in tropical climates. They have the same affect as cracking a window in a steamy room! Hopefully the photos do this thing justice The print reminds me of a beautiful acrylic painting. I am not sure what I like more, the vibrant hues or the playful fit! Regardless, I wore this little number to a rooftop dinner at Hacienda San Angel. There we celebrated my parent’s 45th Wedding Anniversary. For this happy occasion, I dressed it with rose gold sandals and matching tassel earrings. But what’s really special about this romper is that it can go from beach to dinner. For a daytime look, I’d swap the heels for flip-flops and throw my hair in a bun. There’s no point in fighting the humidity…clearly!

Bodysuits are hot garments for the summer. But as I alluded to in this post, finding one that fits well and is comfortable is another story! When they fit correctly, they are both sexy and chic. I love dressing a bodysuit with boyfriend denim and skirts. They lay so perfectly underneath fitted and loose garments a like. One of my biggest pet peeves is excess bulk underneath a bodycon garment.

There is nothing crisper than neutrals on neutrals during the summer months. When I found this beige bodysuit at Current Clothing, I knew it would be perfect with my new rose gold heels. I love the plunging neckline and strappy back. I paired it with a white fitted midi skirt. This length can be hard to wear when you’re blessed with a petite frame. If you are in the same boat, always ravitate towards high waisted midis. This one is high rise and features a back slit. Both details help with the height issue! Due to my love affair with rose gold, I took advantage of the opportunity to wear tassel statement earrings and matching sunnies. Fun Fact, Jonathan discovered these sunglasses for me. Who knew he could play the role of personal shopper too?!

So what’s the secret? It’s all about the composition – the garment’s material make up. It would be easy to write off all lightweight fabrics but those come in handy in the form of undershirts. So before you purchase a bodysuit, always ask yourself how you plan to wear it. Are you wearing it under a fabulous jacket? If so, rayon or cutout bodysuits are great alternatives to the traditional camisole. Are you wearing it solo with jeans or a skirt? If you answered yes to the question above, choose the fabric wisely. Consider polyurethane or a wrap design for sufficient coverage.

I have an obsession with this ruffle bodysuit because it functions as a stand alone top. The scuba fabric provides ample coverage minus bulk. It looks great with pants and skirts alike. Better yet, it could pass for a designer item at a rock bottom price. Today I’m dressing it with this jacquard skirt from the H&M Conscious Exclusive collection. Sadly, but not surprisingly, this golden beauty sold out the same day it was released. See gorgeous alternatives here, here, and here. Regardless, you should still buy the bodysuit! I can assure you you’ll wear it frequently. After all ruffles are HUGE this season. The bigger the better.

I love restaurants that are tasty and “chill.” We frequent Capannina during the week nights on the patio in “work clothes,” and Saturdays inside dressed to kill. In the life of Kelsey and Jonathan Kaplan, work clothes range from barre garb, scrubs, slacks, to sport coats. The point I am trying to make is that it doesn’t really matter what you wear! Regardless, I feel my best when I am over dressed. With that said, I always take advantage of an opportunity to wear something spicy, like this leopard jacket.

Last fall I bought a beautiful leopard and emerald faux fur coat in Italy. The ROI was great on this item as it became my go-to winter coat. Fortunately or unfortunately, it is no longer cold enough to wear faux fur in San Francisco. This lightweight leopard print jacket is a great springtime addition to my date night attire. It looks expensive but looks can be deceiving. At H&M, you can purchase this item for only $69!

Photos do not do this sassy jacket justice. The metallic print is super sharp and appears custom made. I receive so many compliments from women of all ages during dinner at Capannina. On the versatility scale, I rate it a 10. You can wear it as an overcoat, a dress coat, or as pictured above with a bodysuit. As an attempt to balance out the tight top on my upper half, I paired this look with destroyed girlfriend jeans (last seen here). Hope you enjoy my date night attire, but even if you don’t, you still have to try Capannina!

Fashion designers are reinventing the “classic top” by incorporating ruffles. It sounds dramatic, but it is the truth! Go see for yourself. I am fond of this idea as I always keep an eye out for basics with a twist. This ruffle blouse from H&M is the perfect example. If you look closely, the sleeves feature adjustable button cuffs. The standard blue button-down blouse was totally the inspiration behind this piece. While I do not typically wear button-downs, I sure as heck wear “wanna bes” with ruffles and one-shoulder necklines. For those of you who prefer a traditional neckline, this is a great alternative.

Classic shirts are very easy to style and the same can be said about this one. To begin, closely consider the occasion. Are you attending a bridal shower, brunch, or afternoon tea? If you answered yes to any of the above, I recommend pairing your ruffle shirt with white denim and wedge sandals. For evening wear however, I suggest dressing your top with black denim as seen here. I outfitted myself in this ensemble for dinner and a movie. Dinner was good, but the movie was even better. Have you heard the buzz about Get Out? I do not want to give anything away, but I will leave you with this, it is worth the hype!
