How to Add Color to your Neutral Wardrobe

For some of us the emergence of color is great news, but for others vibrant hues may be slightly intimidating. If you fall into the latter group, I encourage you to give the trend a try. And you don’t have to leave the house in a lime green outfit to participate! Start by including pops of color into your neutral ensemble. Pair a floral top (13) with a pair of blush pants (20), and a vibrant lip color. Or, incorporate a vibrant shoe (10) with a crisp little white dress (5). There’s no wrong way to do it!

Stand Out in the Crowd

It’s official, I want one of everything on this list. The rainbow maxi (1) is an obvious must-have item, but I’ve been eyeing the mules (10) and pumps (11) for weeks. One can never own too many pairs of shoes…am I right? But aside from bold hues and vibrant prints, I am loving the resurgance of tie dye apparel. It makes wearing button downs (8) and classic tops (7) more exciting to wear. Now which item is on your must-have list?!

Behind the Blog (BTB)

As with every blog shoot, there is a story “behind the blog.” Last Friday night I wore this outfit to Bix. If you haven’t been there yet, it is an old timey San Francisco institution that sits in the heart of Jackson Square. Think wood paneled bar and live piano player…plus it’s home to the city’s best martinis. The glasses are chilled on ice, and the blue cheese olives are divine. Well, I’m never not jumping at the opportunity for an outfit pic, and last Friday was no exception! After framing the shot, testing the light, and “staging” my little corner of the bar, an innocent bystander passes by with a DSLR camera. I didn’t even have to ask…he started shooting and captured the two photos below. Talk about serendipity…

Larger than Life Earrings

Should I pat myself on the back for this one?! I think my Gucci earrings qualify as LARGER than life (insert laughing emoji). I could not agree more with this fashion prediction. Sometimes all it takes to effortlessly transform an ok outfit into a masterpiece is a pair of statement earrings. Jewelry lovers rejoice! This pair is currently on my wish list.

Wide Leg Pants

I’ve said it before and I’m saying it again, skinny jeans are on their way out. Hello flare jeans! This is a-ok with me as this style of denim is very elongating for petite women #winning. Are you new to the wide leg trend?! Take this pair for a test drive – they’re only $58 and do not stretch out after a day’s wear. I own them in blue and black. What are you waiting for?!

Studs, Pearls, and Bold Buckles

Thank you Pinterest for justifying my latest Gucci splurge! Since this pearl belt (look for less here) came into my life, suddenly dressing is easier. When it’s not hanging on my hips, it’s synching my waist. And when I’m not wearing it, it makes a very pretty table-weight on my desk. Haha. You may recognize this dress from a Wish List Wednesday post a couple of weeks ago. Simply put, I could not resist the urge to buy it! I refer to this little number as my, “Lady Gaga” dress. The shoulder pads remind me of her. I bought it at full price, but I am happy to report that it is now 50% off and available in every size. In fact, the entire Nasty Gal website is 50% off, but every item is final sale. Do your due dilignce and read the reviews and refer to the size charts. The material is not stretchy at all so I recommend sizing up.

I already got my money’s worth with this dress as I wore it during New York Fashion week, and again for Valentine’s Day dinner last night in SF. It has a very thin lining so I suggest wearing black undergarments including stockings underneath it. I do not want to compete with the floral embroidery so I wear it solo and add a little funk with earrings and shoes. What do you think, on a scale of 1-10 how Gaga do I look?

The Dress

As you can probably imagine, fashionistas take the statement “dress to impress” to a whole new level during NYFW. Luckily, you can always rely on Nasty Gal when you’re in the market for a spicy statement piece. This dress will definitely have heads turnin’ whether you’re in the Big Apple or out with your sweetie for V-Day. A fun take on the traditional LBD, the black sheer design is simply chic and the magenta floral embroidery adds a unique touch. But can we talk about the shoulder pads?! Talk about a blast from the past!

The Shoes

To my advantage, I already own a pair of pearl stunners that would look great with this dress. Check out how I styled them for my Birthday here. However, velvet booties would create a visually appealing contrast and I have my eye on this pair. They are 50 % off – hooray! If you have had enough of the bootie scene, consider a pair of transparent heels. This hip style is about to make a grand entrance into the fashion scene and the “Portal” in smoke is a good starting point.

The Accessories

Bare legs in freezing temperatures is not smart. Consider pairing sheer black tights with this ensemble. For added warmth, top a black fur vest (similar to yesterday’s look) over it. Add a pop of color with Sephora’s cream lip stain in Blackberry Sorbet.

Black is always safe and it does not have to be boring. When I found this mock neck maxi dress, I knew it needed something to put it over the edge. Normally I would layer up with necklaces and earrings, but half of the reason this dress is such a sharp piece is because it is SO sleek. This yellow moto jacket was the perfect finishing touch. I used to avoid wearing garments with silver hardware, as I prefer gold, but it is one of my fashion resolutions to mix metals. I accessorized with black accents – a purse and tassel earrings and polished off the look with pearl embellished booties (last seen here). Is there something you once said you would “never wear?” I would love to hear!
