During the initial outfit planning stage for this post, something occurred to me. I often refer to “basics with a twist,” but I have never dedicated a write up about them. Today’s the day I am discussing why not so basic “basics” should make up at least one third of your wardrobe. Don’t get me wrong, I’m a lover of dresses, jumpers, and skirts. They are so fun to wear and quite stylish, but they are not always the most practical garments. Now let’s begin with this ruffle sleeve top! If you are reading this blog, chances are high that you are seeking fashspiraton or helpful style tips. Do yourself a favor and balance out your closet with some basics with a twist. This will require you to do some thinking outside of the box. The next time you’re out shopping, consider a classic top with dramatic sleeves. A cable-knit sweater with a unique hem. Colored denim versus traditional blue. Once you have a solid foundation, you’ll begin to notice that a simple outfit does not have to be a plain outfit. I have made it a point to buy at least one shirt whenever I […]
Bootie season is officially among us. It is my favorite time of year because the earthy colors are exquisite and booties are a comfortable style of shoe. Whether you’re in a dress, jeans, or something in between, the right pair of booties can elevate your ensemble. Below are two pairs currently on my wish list. Let your velvet obsession begin! Who would have thought that this fabric would resurface in a variety of shapes and forms?! I sure didn’t after I retired my velvet overalls from Gap way back in the 90s (insert laughing emoji). Anyway, I’m stoked that velvet is “in” again because it’s actually very regal. How about this block heel bootie?! The “Edit” in blue is dreamy and it’ll match with everything you already dress your blue skinny jeans with. It is safe to say that Kristin Cavallari and I have the same taste in shoes – I live in her slouch bootie during the work week. Just as I went to order another pair, I discovered the “Santorini.” OH. EM. GEE. Never have I ever laid eyes on a funkier shoe. I cannot decide what I like better, the geometrical shaped heel, or […]
You may recall this feather hem dress from from a previous Wish List Wednesday post. There was no way I could publish a post of this nature without purchasing at least one of the featured items. Surprise, surprise…this LBD showed up on my doorstep a few days later. “One is never over-dressed or underdressed with a little black dress” – Karl Lagerfeld. I could not have said it better myself! If you do not yet own a short, midi, and maxi LBD, hop to it. There is no better item to have on hand for a spontaneous occasion. Having a collection of varying lengths will provide you with even more options when you’re in an outfit pickle. This feather hem dress is a playful take on the traditional LBD. You cannot help but crack a smile while wearing this little thing. Featuring a mock neck and long sleeve design, this item is perfect for your fall functions and can take you through the winter equally as well. I’m thinking fishnets and a fur caplet once the weather permits! For this occasion I dressed this piece with my go-to ladylike accessories: pearls. I chose a long beaded […]
As if you need another excuse to get your shop on, today is the last day to take advantage of The Event of the Season Shopbop sale ! Save up to 30% off your order with code MAINEVENT16. Below are a number of items on my “hot list.” Selvage jeans are in! It cracks me up that the more rips and tears the more likely we are to buy a pair of jeans in this day and age. Regardless of the paradox, it is the reality. So why not take advantage of it?! Add some edge to your polished ensemble with black fringe denim. Am I the only person who gravitates to dresses, skirts, and jumpers? It’s so hard for me to commit to a top when I know that money could be going towards a fabulous dress. That is why I make it a point to purchase tops when they’re on sale, like this off the shoulder cable-knit sweater. You will never suffer from buyer’s remorse when you follow this rule of thumb: classics with a twist! Accessories define you. We all have the basic ability to remove a dress from the hanger, […]
It is not a secret that I am a big fan of pom poms. Remember this summer time look?! It is your lucky day because I have hunted down a pom pom sweater and it may just be my favorite fall item to date! This sweater is great because it is a relatively neutral hue and the sleeves are 3/4 length – two qualities I look for in a garment during the infamous transitional period. Wear it solo while the weather remains moderate, or pair it with a long sleeve button down when the temperature begins to drop. With the temperature lingering in the mid 60’s, I dressed this pom pom sweater with a faux suede skirt. Being a one-size-fits all piece, expect the fit to be a bit boxy. For that reason, I went with a fitted mini skirt. It is always a good idea to balance out your ensemble with a fitted top and loose bottom or vice versa. When the winter weather officially rolls in, I’ll most likely swap the skirt for green skinny jeans. How’s that for a versatile item?!
