NYFW

The hamster metaphor sounds funny, but it really is the perfect depiction. From the moment you commit to going, the wheel starts rotating. Perhaps you’re going a steady speed as you outfit plan, reach out to brands/PR agencies, then catch a breather as you wait hope for invitations to come. Then, from the moment you touchdown in NYC, it’s GO GO GO! You are running around to Fashion Shows, putting your best foot forward at brand meetings, and connecting with like-minded people from across the globe. Mind you, you are doing all of this in carefully curated outfits, with freshly primped hair, and high heel shoes! The things we do for “the gram…”

SoHo is Prime Real-estate

If there is one piece of advice I would offer a NYFW rookie it would be this: stay in SoHo! It is already challenging enough trying to get from A to B thanks to NYC traffic (your outfit will not be suitable for the subway stairs!) The last thing you want to do is add to the stressor by securing accommodations far from the action. For your reference, Spring Studios is the main stage. You definitely want to be within ten minutes of here. 11 Howard is my hotel of choice because it is a short Uber ride to the shows, walking distance to restaurants/bars, as well as the shops on Broadway, and nearby a plethora of picturesque backdrops.

Make time to Eat

This probably sounds like common sense but JUST DO IT. Happy is prettier than hangry…and we want to look good in our photos! The days go by fast and when you’re busy it is easy to forget to eat. Arrive prepared and stock your purses with RXBARS, and take advantage of the complimentary water bottles at Spring Studios. Trust me, you’ll thank me later!

Photoshoots

If it is at all possible to bring a photographer with you, rather than hiring one by the hour, DO IT. I felt much more relaxed while taking photos with our “live in” photographer each day before the madness. This might be considered a luxury, so consider this cost effective option if it’s out of the question. Hire a photographer to shoot your daily looks but have them meet you outside of Spring Studios or the location of your meetings. Ask him or her if they will shoot with your camera card and then edit your own pics. This will take turnaround time out of the equation and you won’t feel so rushed. Let’s get real, we want to be able to post our #ootd pics in a timely manner!

Have Fun

Most importantly, have fun! NYFW is seven days devoted to fashion and style. Despite the chaos and exhaustion it is important to keep things in perspective. Exhausting

Imagine a job interview that lasts for five consecutive days. That’s NYFW! It is exhausting physically and emotionally. Your body is tired from getting up early and going to sleep late and your feet hurt from your high heel shoes. You’re emotionally drained after “performing” several days/hours in a row. But if there is one time of year for you to put your best foot forward, this is it. It’s prime time to nurture brand relationships and meet the face behind the @ address.

Fun

I love Instagram because it allows like-minded individuals to connect all over the world. New York Fashion Week is like a big Instagram meet up – the camaraderie is wonderful. It is SO much fun meeting and conversing with the girls behind the blogs. You know who you are…!

Expensive

I’m gonna be blunt…NYFW is expensive. Between plane tickets, Ubers, accommodations, and meals, it adds up quick. Never mind the cost of “looking good” and staying on brand. While collaborations are helpful during fashion week, if you’re a control freak like me, you’re going to spend a pretty penny on apparel. Just remember, you get out of it as much as you put in!

Rewarding

Being recognized feels good. Whether it is by a follower or another person in the digital marketing space. It has the same affect! It means that your style is appreciated – a reminder that hard work pays off. This year I returned from NYFW feeling recharged and driven. I was featured in Harper’s Bazaar, The CUT, and The Independent, praised for my “Street Style” fashion. Pinch me! This is just the beginning…

The only thing better than wide leg pants are lace-up wide leg pants! These party pants are a conversation starter! The fit is ultra flattering featuring a high-rise waist and fit and flare silhouette. If you are looking for a way to accentuate your cures, this is it! Aside from the good shape, the fabric is smooth and comfortable. Petite girls rejoice…the cropped hem actually fits me ankle length. Now styling them is simple. All you need is a reliable crop top. Think white, or beige.

Another style I am itching to get into are platforms. Again, they dominated the runway and may save you a trip to the tailor. Score! From sneakers, mules, sandals, you name it, they are available in a platform version. This cognac pair is a safe way to ease your way into the trend. There is nothing crazy about ‘em minus the heel height. Petite girls rejoice!

During my visit to BAUBLEBAR HQ, it became evident that tassels are not going anywhere. If you’re in the late majority, now is the time to hop on the bandwagon! Again, start simple (this ivory pair will match with everything) then branch out. I love these frilly adornments because they effortlessly funk up your ensemble.

I am a naturally bubbly person. It’s the reason I’m always smiling in my blog pics. I look so STRANGE with a serious face…that is probably why I nervously laugh in serious situations (guilty!). To me, happy is the only way to be, and I’m the happiest when I like my outfit. I choose to be confident and daring. My mom would tell you I mastered these skills on the field hockey field, but it carries over to the ensembles I wear. What do you mean you wouldn’t wear a thigh high slit dress or a tinsel fringe jacket?! Dare to be bold! I’m hyper. It’s hard for me to sit still and I’m always thinking about the next activity or outfit to wear! This look exemplifies all of these qualities which is why it’s my absolute favorite from New York Fashion Week. I wish I could wear it again sooner, but I might have to save the jacket for Halloween. There’s nothing wrong with dressing up as a 1970’s disco chic two years in a row, is there?!

10 things I wish I knew before my first NYFW

1. Download GPS Radar – This free app will help you organize your electronic tickets. Ain’t no body got time to keep track of paper tickets.
2. Bring a Wireless Charger – Between the Boomerangs, IG stories, and daily outfit pics, your phone will loose battery faster than ever. Carry a wireless charger or two with you at all times.
3. Take the Subway – I literally almost pulled out my hair after missing two shows because of the infamous NYC traffic. Suck it up and take the subway or lease a helicopter for the week…hah!
4. Utilize Glamsquad – This service sends a hairstylist, makeup artist, or nail technician to your hotel room! Not only is it convenient, but it’ll free up time for you to multitask. Use code “kkaplan0506” for a $25 credit.
5. Make Time to Eat – This seems obvious, but I ate “breakfast” at 4:30 pm two out of the four days I was in NYC. HANGRY doesn’t match your outfit.
6. Wear comfortable Stuart Weitzman Shoes – No really though, if you own them, don’t bother with another pair. You will be on your feet all day and the blisters and pain are not worth it. Stuart Weitzman saved my behind.
7. Tag Products on rewardStyle Beforehand – If you’re a blogger, tag all of the items in your suitcase before your first show. That way if you snap an outfit pic on the go half of the work is already done for you.
8. Carry a Pillbox – During NYFW your time is very calculated. It’s a mad rush between shows. Carry a pillbox with your go to pain reliever in case a headache, achy knees, or something else creeps up on you.
9. Download Venmo – Sharing is caring during NYFW. Venmo makes splitting the bill easy as pie.
10. Create Videos not IG Stories – It’s your job to document the week via IG stories or snapchat for your followers to see. But rather than haphazardly uploading snippets of the day (missing important captions and tags), film short videos with your iPhone. Take the time to thoughtfully caption your stories when you’re less distracted.

I find it so much fun to meet the face behind the @ symbol. You know that girl you’ve been following for months (maybe even years) that you just know you’d connect with. The people watching is also very entertaining. Just when you think you nailed it with your outfit, someone walks by in the most incredible ensemble that you’ve ever seen. Then there are those that leave you wondering…people go to great lengths to get their picture taken by street photographers! You already know my visit to BaubleBar HQ was a trip highlight, but spending time with Instagram friends (that’s a thing now!) and bouncing ideas of off each other is invaluable.

Now let’s discuss the outfit! Most of my NYFW looks are not what you would refer to as “everyday attire.” But can you blame me? There is only one week a year where ANYTHING goes – so go all out! I chose to mix in this off the shoulder maxi dress because it’s simply chic. It is so satisfying when a brand new dress fits perfectly right out of the package. With a three-four inch heel, even a shortie like me can get away wearing this. The color is a great fall hue, and it can appear dressy or not. What would you say if I told you this off the shoulder maxi is only $24?!

The highlights of my day were shooting blog pics with Laurel Creative and visiting Baublebar HQ! If you’ve been following me for a while, then you know that I never leave the house without jewelry. It was an unforgettable experience getting to meet the team face-to-face. The office was chic and inviting and obviously the baubles were fantastic. Fashion Forecast: Color is the new black. Tassels, drop earrings, and pom poms of nearly every hue are in style and ready to wear. On the other end of the spectrum, it’s still fashionable to mix dainty strands with your statement pieces. Maybe I’ll get into that trend, but in my book, go big or go home!

Now about the outfit…or should I say, LSU Golden Girl uniform (insert laughing emoji). There is no better time to break out your most glamorous item than to visit Baublebar HQ! This sequin stunner looks like something you would see on the red carpet. But enough about the top – the pants are equally killer. Plus, you can dress them so many ways for the fall. I am thinking chunky crop sweaters or long sleeve bodysuits. Now it is only appropriate to rock BaubleBar jewelry inside of BB HQ. Luckily the Mely Ball Drop earrings matched my outfit perfectly. This two piece dress speaks for itself. The bold print and full skirt create show stopping DRAMA. For a petite woman, full skirts can have a swallowing effect. But what I realized after wearing this one is that a drop-waist is key. It hugs your frame before tapering out. For your reference, I am wearing a small and I did not have to shorten the skirt before wearing it. Instead, I opted to wear four inch high heel sandals. This stunner is coming with me to New York Fashion Week!
