Formal occasions are anything but routine. So when the opportunity presents itself to you, go all out! Over the weekend I had the pleasure of attending a black tie affair at the Academy of Sciences museum in Golden Gate Park. Not only was the space beautiful, but the exhibits were open for attendees to enjoy and explore. The food stations were very impressive serving up top shelf cocktails, delectable hors d’oeuvres, mini entrees, and a beautiful spread of sushi. Note to self: avoid chopsticks and soy sauce while wearing a formal gown….
With ample warning of this event taking place, I made it a point to take my time and find a stellar gown that wouldn’t break the bank. There’s nothing worse than spending a lot of money on a fancy shmancy dress that you’ll only wear once. With that in mind, I turned to my go-to online retailer, lulu*s! The Sorella Light Blue Maxi Dress was priced just right ($205!) and in one of my favorite silhouettes. This gorgeous strapless gown features a sweetheart neckline, and princess seams down the fit and flare bodice. Available in ivory and light blue, to me, this simple yet elegant dress is like a blank canvas awaiting the right accessories. Although you cannot see them, I kept it clean and paired this stunner with matching lace-up sandals (as seen in last month’s post, A Crop and a Midi). Knowing I would style my hair to the side, in a 1940’s wave, I was on the hunt for a pair of sizable statement earrings. Leave it to Jest Jewels to carry just the right pair of vintage Miriam Haskell ear bling. These one-of-a-kind earrings were like the icing on a cake – the perfect finishing touch. To go along with the whole old school Hollywood Glam theme, I toted around my belongings in a gold box clutch purse.

Hi Kelsey,
Do you ever re-sell your dresses? I was interested in the dress, but am reluctant to spend a lot on it plus alterations since I would be wearing it once!
Beautiful Dress! Just wanted to know your height + heels you are wearing? I want to order this dress but scared about the amount of alteration that would be needed 🙁
Hi there! I am just over 5 feet tall. I had the dress shortened but that was all it needed. I am wearing lace-up powder blue heels. Shop the shoes here and if you want more pics of the shoes click here. The dress is even more gorgeous in person and I did not stop getting compliments throughout the event. Thanks for contacting me. 🙂

Hi, I am purchasing this dress and was wondering what size did you happen to purchase? I am afraid of the fit.
Hi Jennifer, I purchased an xs and usually wear a size zero. It fit perfectly through the body I just had to get it shortened. I hope that helps. Feel free to ask me more questions if you need more help.
