It’s easy to pack your wardrobe with the colors most commonly associated with fall. The greens, yellows, and brows. But this presents a problem if you are a lover of color, like myself. I wear a lot of vibrant hues and a lot of pink – regardless of the time of year. Rather than completely changing your color palette, consider switching up your accessories. Instead of straw, wear velvet. Or, swap the sandals altogether for a pair of booties (as seen here). It is never acceptable to sacrifice your personal style to conform to a set of rules you think you are supposed to follow. Tweaks like this make it easier to wear whatever you please 365 days a year.

This dress is not a traditional fall garment but it works in California weather! I LOVE the bright hues and statement sleeves – surprise, surprise! The mini length is great for booties and you could drape a jean jacket over your shoulders for added warmth. But if the temperature is already dropping where you live, don’t fret because there is a top available in this glorious print too. And it features an off-the-shoulder neckline. Is there anything better?! Now i just have to decide, is two garments in the same print excessive?!

They are versatile. If you recall, the last time I hit the streets of SF in mama pants, I was wearing them with stiletto heels. Today, however, I’m wearing them with white booties! I love a pair of jeans that I can style with all the shoes in my closet. Pro Tip: extend the life of your mom jeans and cuff don’t cut. Without permanently altering the length, they’re suitable for shoes of varying heel heights.

Mom jeans are comfortable. I can hardly believe those words just came out of my mouth because I used to write off pants that did not stretch. Let’s just say, #BigBootyProblems. But, as it turns out, jeans made out of 100% cotton are totally doable if they are a relaxed fit. HELLO mom jeans! Aside from the comfy fit, the high waist is also very desirable. Gone are the days of plumber cracks low-rise pants! Rather, waists are getting higher and tops are getting shorter. Welcome to 2018! They call ’em “mom jeans,” but truthfully they’re jeans for any active woman. Ain’t nobody got time to stop and pull up their drooping drawers.

Now you already saw me style my MJ (I’m abbreviating from here on out because I sound like a broken record) for a night on the town. Today’s look is perfect for bopping around a sunny San Francisco day. Jonathan says I look like Big Bird in this shaggy cardigan, but the last time I checked, Big Bird doesn’t wear crop tops and mini cat eye sunglasses. Take that!

This stripe sweater dress is only $48. If you can avoid it, do not spend more than $100 on a new trend in case you only wear it once. I was weary of buying this item online because the model has a good 10 inches on me, and it is a maxi length garment. Luckily, the length is just right with a high heel bootie! The fit is tight, but the material is forgiving. What I mean is that it provides moderate coverage – it’s not too thin. But for those of you who want even more coverage, a longline vest is the way to go. Do you dare to be bold?!

All I have to say is thank the clothing g-d for re-inventing flounce hem jeans. They are a petite girl’s pair of dream jeans. For a few years there, there was no middle ground. It was skinny or flare. And in all honesty, I do not think skinny jeans are the most flattering style for short legged folks. They have the ability to cut off our legs at an unflattering length. It used to be that your top or shoes would do the talking, but not when you are wearing bottoms like this!

The coat dress ia a #bosslady’s secret weapon during the cold weather months. We all have crazy busy days where outfit planning simply does not fit into the equation. Fortunately, a reliable coat dress can play two roles: outerwear and daytime wear. Who doesn’t appreciate a two-for-one deal?! Rather than coordinating an entire ensemble, let a coat dress do the thinking and maybe even the talking for you!

So how does one dress in a statement color without looking like a clown?! The answer is rather simple: combine it with classics! In this instance I am wearing a loud coat dress with black and white polka dot pants. The timeless print effortlessly tones down the nontraditional hue – it’s all about balance. Naturally I opted for a bright white boot, though black is perfectly acceptable. For your reference, I am wearing an xs in the coat and it fits true to size. How do you “do” statement hues?! I would love to hear it!

With ties to the Northeast, I finally had a plan. I would finish college at LSU and move back to the Tristate Area to work in NYC. But even after earning my degree, I wasn’t sold on the idea. I was managing a clothing boutique and LOVED styling outfits for my regular clients. I knew if I aspired to become a retail buyer in NYC, I would not be working directly with consumers. Plus, excel spreadsheets make me crosseyed and dyslexic tendencies start to enter the picture. That could get ugly when you’re in charge of hundreds of thousands of dollars in apparel.

Little did I know that my move to San Francisco would not only place me in the “center of the universe,” but it would open my eyes to a passion for writing. Now don’t get me wrong, I do not and will never enjoy writing research papers. However, when I arrived in SF almost four and a half years ago, I didn’t know a soul! I lost my hair stylist, brow lady, veterinarian…the list goes on. I found myself reading a ton of reviews on Yelp. The reading eventually turned into contributions of my own and I became a “Yelp Elite” having written 200 reviews on food (DUH!) and everything in between. Evidently I do enjoy writing when I have a genuine interest in the subject matter.

And just like that, my blog (business) was born. Well, sort of. My website started out as “KK and GG,” a resource for dog owners looking for pet friendly things to do in SF. But my passion is fashion and it became clear to me that my website and blog needed to be more fashionable in every sense of the way! Long story short, Kelsey Kaplan Fashion is where it’s at and I don’t envision that it’ll change in the foreseeable future. So why am I telling this story? Because the blogging industry is still new and it still gets misconstrued as a very time consuming hobby. That it ain’t! It is certainly time consuming, but it’s WAY more than a hobby. It is a business. There are start up costs and investments, monthly expenses, contracts, and account receivables.

While the blogging life may appear glamorous at all times, behind the scenes it is a lot of work, sometimes sacrifices, and it never turns off. As long as there are consumers trolling the internet, you must continue producing fresh content. While store fronts close for holidays and maybe even Sundays, Instagram never closes. That means on weekends, vacations, and maybe even wedding anniversaries it is your responsibility to engage with the platform. In a conventional workplace, there is something called a corporate latter that you can climb after meeting benchmarks. There is no such thing in the blogging industry and there are no manuals either. You learn on the way. I remember publishing my 300th blog post and it being like crickets. Was I ever going to reach a “tipping point?!”

I think it is important to note that I’m not complaining. I’m just being honest. Just like everything in life, there are advantages and disadvantages associated with a career in blogging. Obviously to me the perks outweigh the disadvantages or I wouldn’t sacrifice my beauty rest (you think I’m kidding?!) It never gets old receiving boxes of “blogger mail.” As my mom says, “it’s like Hanukkah 365 days a year!” But aside from the awesome gifting opportunities, it’s very thrilling to be one of the first people to try a new product. But the fun doesn’t stop there. In the scheme of things, the blogging community is small. Everyone is connected via Instagram and hashtags make it possible to virtually “meet” like-minded people worldwide. It really is amazing. I used to think I was the only person who dreamt about clothes all day everyday, then I went to NYFW.

If you answered yes to the questions above, then you have what it takes to make a career in blogging. Now all that’s left to do is: buy a domain name, find somewhere to host your new website, buy cloud storage to store your data, get the lowdown on SEO, pretend to be a coder, design a theme, write your first post, learn photography and Lightroom/Photoshop, and maybe even find an IG husband/wife/boyfriend/girlfriend! If you do not want to draw attention to yourself, stay clear of this dress. It will stop people in their tracks. Not only are the colors happy and bright, but the sweeping fabric sways with every move you make. Speaking of, pleated garments are the best because they are easy to care for. You don’t really have to worry about getting anymore wrinkles! Anyway, the fit and feel of this dress is relaxed and cool. Hence the reason it’s great for the fall. You never know if it’ll be in the low 60’s or high 70’s!

I usually gravitate towards tailored clothing to avoid the potato sack look, but this pleated maxi dress is an exception. For your reference, I am five feet and wearing the size small. I don’t really care that it is a bit “oversized” because that is sort of the point. This pretty little thing was not made to accentuate your curves. It was designed to show off the material. I styled it with white booties because they are my current obsession. Black shoes, however, would be an appropriate substitute. What are you waiting for? Show off your colorful side in this pleated maxi dress!
